I keep all my standard wrenches in one draw an an the metrics in another I do the same with my the sockets I put my exstinsions an ratchets in the top an misalliance in like hammers or bry bars at the bottom I have probably 100 screwdrivers B/c I never put them back or they get lots I have some of that stuff to put in the bottom of the drawers It help as long as you dont slam it I think every body has the same problem with their boxes To many tools an not enough room for them But I keep buying more
I picked up some socket trays off the Matco truck, can't remember but they weren't that much. All my metric sockets and wrenches are in red organizers and my SAE are in green. I then labeled the drawers so when I'm under the truck my wife or friends can quickly find what they need. Air tools are just tossed in.
I've given up, my parents moved into a guest house we added on for them 2 years ago and now my 80 yr old father is getting his revenge for all of the tools of his that I lost when I was a kid. I'm constantly saying "Dad, where is my ___ at". He always says "I dunno", then I find it in his car, house, sock drawer,or the dryer("well,it got wet")The other day I found my 2 1/2 year old playing with a pneumatic framing nailer that he just put down and walked away from.
Welp I use socket rails but I hate those POS metal ones. I got the the ones made by Ernst Mfg. You can find them at their web-site, Toolking.com and I think Northern Tool & supply. They a very customizable and even though plastic are tough. I've been using the same ones for 5 years. There is a pliers organizer I'm going to buy but I need to have a deeper drawer for it. It is at The Pliers Rack . When I was in the Air Force our tool kits where in drawers with foam cutouts and every shift had to check to be sure they where all there. Sears sells foam for this but man it takes alot of time to do.
And as just a thought, how come all those pictures had a bunch of sockets missing even though they were in an organizer?
One thing I do is to keep all my screwdrivers in one drawer. The phillips head all face left and the flat head all face right. Helps to find what you need quick.
Does this avoid the Flux Reversal Phenomena (FRP)? You know- when you reach for a phillips, all the screwdrivers in the drawer are flat, and when you reach for a flat, they are all phillips. How does the drawer know, anyway?

This doesn't work - I am at 23 toolboxes and counting. And i still have tools scattered all over the place. And that isn't even counting the "totes".
On a practical note, the magnetic bars sold to hold kitchen knives work well in some places. I did lay out all my open, box, and combo wrenches and swipe a swath of spray pain across the middle of each one - red for sae, green for metric. Do both sides, light spray, just across the center - easy to see at a glance which is which in the box.
I try to group according to function - one tool box for plumbing, one for electrical, mechanical, welding, machining, Etc. Works, but tools tend to migrate anyway.
At the end of the day, just glad I have the tools - it could be worse!
