Engine Balance??
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Feb-02 AT 10:24 PM (EST)]I just bought a '84 F-150. The person who had it pulled the original 302 out and put in a 351W from a '78 Ranchero. The motor feels like it has a slight vibration to it, more noticiable at low rpm's. I don't know if the crank damper or the flexplate were used off the 302 or, if they're even interchangeable. How could I tell if they are wrong, or if they are the problem. The truck has a C-6 trans. What should be used on the motor? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It could be a problem with the wrong flywheel. There was some debate when they changed the balance on the 302's, but somebody had a link on here to a site with some ford block numbers, and those numbers clearly showed a balance change around 1981. The only way I know is too try to find out the numbers on the flywheel. Of course these probably can't be seen unless it's taken out. The 302 and 351w flexplates interchange, so it's quite possible he used the wrong one, especially if it vibrates in the driveway with the tranny in park. The early flexplates where 28oz inbalance, and the later 50oz inbalance.

I would think if the flexplate was wrong you would end up with a pretty clear vibration that would get worse with higher rpms...The C6 is a good tranny behind the 351W other than the fact it does not have OD...but the C6 is pretty tough!!!
