mains or oil pump?
O.K. i've been having trouble with oil pressure in my 88 351w. The ele. guage would drop off to nothing at idle after it warmed up. So today i put a mech. guage on it. It is now showing the oil pressure to be about 5 pounds at idle but only raises to 15 at 2000 rpm's. What i'm wondering (hoping) is would a weak oil pump be the culprit behind this problem or is it the bearing's. I was thinking that with worn bearings the pressure should come up higher than 15 or am I wrong.

It all depends. I had a oil pump that was out of limits. The gap between rotors was more then .006 I had .012 So I changed my pump. I noticed a difference in oil press on cold start up. Ater the engine warmed up it went to 12 psi. I talked to a machine shop guy and he told me not worry about the oil PSI. As long as it increases there is no problem.
