Hi I have a 1999 F-150 XL Regular Cab, long box with the 4.2 V6 and 51,000 miles on it. In the last month or two I have noticed a loud clunking noise. It sounds alot like when you bend metal back and forth, (you know that kind of warping WUNK sound). I tend to notice it more while driving on city streets, mainly while taking some sort of left hand turn. I cant say for sure where the noise is coming from, but me and a few buddies have decided that it is some where in the back. Also it may just be my paranoia now but it seems to me that the rear suspension is louder. It sounds almost like its rattling when I go over bumps and potholes. Any help is greatly appreciated, this is really starting to annoy me!
I recently had a similar problem with my 01' F150 Supercrew 4x4. It was quiet on the highway but when driving on a windy road you could hear a CLUNK when turning to the left. When rocking the truck in the driveway you could hear the clunk as well and it sounded like it was coming from right under the middle of the cab. It actually ended up being the front driver side sway bar end link. (Which the dealer told be was pretty common) The actual stock link has a plastic sleeve that the metal part slides through and water will get in there and corrode them. You may want to check that. It was a pretty simple fix, turn the wheel to the left and slap the new link in. I hope this helps
i did replace my front drivers side sway bar link a while ago. maybe a year and a half (the old one snapped). I looked at it real quick the other day, but did not see anything. I will take a closer look at it when I get a chance.
Sway bar endlink was my guess. See if the exhaust system is loosened up and rattling around some. Other than that drive it down a street and have someone walk beside and behind it to try and isolate the noise. Make sure you go over some bumps and flat areas to see if it makes a difference.
hi, it took me 2 years to find my clunk and replaced all links, ball joints but it turned out to be the bolt on the suspension arm to the chassis was loose by a turn and a half.
the retaining nuts on top of the rear shocker also make a clunk if they have backed off. good luck bokker.
