Hello I have a 1988 302 in a bronco and tonight when I was driving home from work it started to act up. It was hesitating and not running well at low and idle speeds. I got it home and in the garage and I noticed that the fuel filter is bulged out on the end. I am suspecting a faulty fuel pressure regulator but am interested to hear other opinions. The truck is very hard to start because it seems to be flooding it's self shortley after it begins to run. Any input is greatly appriciated. Thanks in advance Eric
If I remember right, one end of the filter is flat, the other end is domed somewhat. Troubleshooting EFI without a fuel pressure gauge is sorta hopeless. Actron has a good one, sold by Sears, Autozone, ~$35.00 With key on, engine off, should get up to about 40 lbs, a little less when engine running. Was the filter ever changed before, or is it about plugged? To change it you prob. need the slide in fuel line release tool to release the internal grippers on the hose fittings.
Thanks for your reply, yes the filter has been changed about 20,000 ago and the flat end was bulged out. Today I changed the filter and replaced the regulator, this fixed my problem. I opened up the old regulator and it was physically broken inside. There is a very small spring that was just laying down in the bottom of the regulator. I can see where the spring was supposed to be but it was not there so I am confident this fixed my problem. I would like to eventualy invest in a gauge but no this time because the regulator only cost $21.99 from Auto Zone and the gauge is $34.99. Thanks for the reply
