lift questions

hey guys ive gotta a question i deeply need answered i have a 1990 f150 and i want to get it lifted ive saved up about 500 just for this wondering which lift would be better a body or suspension and the the price range THX

I got rough country's 4" lift from rocky mountain susp, shipped to maine for $511. Completely complete!! I also spent another $60 at summit racing for energy suspension's polyurethane pivot and radius arm bushings.

If you don't have money for larger tires, though, then I would get a body lift and find some decent 33's. That should take care of your 5 large.

To get a good suspension lift, you need to save a bit more! Yeah, there are the cheap ebay finds with lesser quality suspension lifts, but remember you get what you pay for. Be careful on how high you want to go and what you will do with the truck. 35's are about max and actually pushing it with the TTB front as the pivots make the axle weak and in some hard offroading cases has actually ripped from the frames! Do a search in the offroad forum and you will hear several instances when that has happened, hence the reason the SAS is a popular swap. Now for the body lift avenue, again, it can be done, an I know that there are millions of people out there running them, but if you plan on taking this truck off road alot, try to stay away from them. The bolts that come in most kits are really a lesser grade, and unless you go out an swap them for at least grade 8's then you take safety into your own hands. I have seen a truck that had a body lift slam into another car at an intersection and the body shifted forward on the frame and only stopped when the firewall hit the motor! Again, I know this is an extreme case, and who knows if the lift was installed properly or not, but do you really want to take that chance to be another extreme example?

Long post, but you need to be aware of all of the options and the consequences of each route, especially if this is your primary or only vehicle. Check my sig to see my SAS'd 150 that is still street leagal, just has the bumpers off to mud race.

I got my lift from Rough Country three years ago, put it on myself and I ride hard off road and I put it away dirty and never have had an ounce of trouble even with 315's and 16x10 wheels. So that whole thing about you get what you pay for does'nt apply in this case just that I saved money for other things. Like an upgraded MSD ignition system,and a little extra towards my new 460. So Its up to you, lift plus new wheels and tires, or just a lift, and have to save again just to get wheels and tires. Oh and my truck is a 89' f250hd 4x4 EFI 460 excab love my truck.

i take my truck trailridin/climbin once a week but the tires im getting from my parents as my bday gift so would it still be better to go for the suspemsion lift cuz what ive heard sounds like body lifts ae junk

I would also never recommend a body lift and yes they're junk and useless. I personnaly
went with a 4 inch lift just to keep my center of gravity a little lower, the way I figured it a 4 inch lift plus 2 extra for my 35's equals 6 inches total, nice height without comprimizing my center of gravity, clears rocks and looks tough.

Stay away from the body lift's if you do get one. Throw the hardware out and replace it with grade 8. When it comes to suspension lifts you get what you pay for. Stay away from kits that have lift blocks as they can crete alot of axle wrap. As for the tires, 38" tires are going to be about as big as you want to go. Anything bigger and your axle will start having problems. If you want to go larger than that, then a s.a.s. is in order. Solid Axle Swap. IF you lookin to save some money... I have heard of shackle flips for the rear, netting you about 4" of lift. I would do a search on it though, im not real sure what it entails or what it would do to your towing capabilities.
Also while im here. Tires: Stay away from a/t's they may seem nice, but in all reality the bring the suck. I have 33" bfg a/t's and they are a horrible tire, when the road is wet, there flat out dangerous. Just something to consider.
Also with a 4" lift i think your getting into an area that you may need longer brake lines and such, not exactly sure on that though.

About the rear shackle flip, check Sky Manufacturing as they have a complete bolt on kit that replaces your rear spring hanger. Yes, it will reduse your load carrying capacity, but it you don't carry anything heavy in the bed normally, then it really won't affect you. And as Don said, it will give you an instant 4" lift in the rear with no more than stock axle wrap (due to the stock block).
