AOD - Unhooked?

This is a two part post regarding a AOD in a 84 F150 2wd.

I recently dicsovered after a 40 mile drive on the freeway where half way through the overdirve stopped engaging as well as I beleive third gear. Being in no place to make a stop to see what the issue was I pressed on thinking the whole time the 24 year old tranny and 229k miles had finally seen its last trip. I dicovered this afternoon that the coupling from the ATV ROD, not a cable, but rod that goes to the trany has literally dissinigrated and the ROD had fall off the carb. My first questions is, knowing how important the adjustment of this rod is, did this probably destroy the tranny?

The second part of this is does anyone have any idea where I can get one of those plastic couplers to get it back on and see just how much damage there was. I will try FORD tomorrow, but am not very helpful.

Thanks for the imput from those in the know on these AOD's!!!

There's no way to really tell how how much damage may or may not have occured without reconnecting the T/V rod. There are some indicators you can check...do the dipstick smell check for burned fluid, or if you have a drain you can empty the pan and check for debris. But there's nothing conclusive without road tesing it. While the AOD may not be a C6, it's still a decent unit that can take a fair degree of abuse.

The bushing should be available from Ford, if not most transmission shops should have it. Best test will be if it still shifts into 3rd and 4th after repairs, unfortunately 4th gear uses a band and it will burn up pretty quickly with no throttle pressure. For adjustment, just replace the bushing and snap it on the carburetor lever, unless the rod got bent it shouldn't have changed setting. If it shifts properly then you are good to go, if it feels early and slips turn the adjusting screw in, if it shifts late and hard, back it out. Turn it about 1/2 turn and check shift feel. There is a tool and pressure gauge to set these, but just like an old GM Hydra-matic (not turbo-hydro) shift feel is the final "tweek" for durability.

the same thing happened 2 me a few years ago. my 83 f100 aod woodnt shift out of first, the tv rod fell off the carb. i drove it about 30 miles to the shop i worked at, luckily it shifted into second after a while. once i discovered the problem, i hooked it back up, wired it back on cause the bushing fell out. that was in 2000. im still driving the truck daily today.

I picked up a new nylon coupler at the dealer, $6 and change and after installing it appears the tranny survived the ordeal in fair shape. Shifts all through the gears even OD but I need to adjust the rod some now as they seem late on the high end. They are soft but then after 230k it was not that firm anyway. I think I will keep my eye out for a used one maybe or start saving for a rebuild in the near future.

Thanks for the comments and again I have to go against the grain and just say that this old truck, including the AOD takes a licking and keeps on ticking. (Hit by a smi, 230k miles, hauling a 28 ft travel trailer, years of stop and go traffic, two teenage boys running it hard and fast)

Got to love them Ford trucks!
