wow! I have a 1987 Ranger reg. cab 4x4 w/ v6 and 5 speed manual, almost identical to that one!
It was my dads truck, and he basically gave to me if i could get it working. It say for about 5-6 years. Mine is pretty rusty though, but still workable. the rear fenders have some rot, and there is one small hole on the side of the bed, and one of the seat mounts broke, but its over all not to horrible.
Anyways, what happend was that when I went to go move it out of the woods last summer, two things happened , 1. Basically every brake line in the truck blew at the same time, and 2. The slave cylinder got stuck, because the transmission input shaft had a bit of light surface rust, and it getting stuck caused it to weaken the springs on the clutch, and ultimately burn the clutch disc into nothing-ness. We just found #2 out this week, when we finally got the truck up on my neighbors lift.
I just picked up an 88 ranger 4x4 for a project to restore. Thats my favorite year for the ranger, this makes the 6th ranger that I've owned. Sure there a good truck, maybe a little wore out, but still ticking just like a timex. My last ranger was an 04 4x4 with the 4.0 sohc, the old 2.9 doesn't have the power it had, but isn't bad. It's nothing a good 5.0 wouldn't fix hee hee. Actually, I'm leaning more torward a push rod 4.0 swap into my 88. The push rod 4.0 doesn't have the hp of the 4.0 sohc, but it does have the torque and it comes in a little lower than the cammer. Any way, I love the first generation rangers, I think thier awesome, I love the squared off look, like a mini F-150.
