1996 F150 problems...

All right...my dad has a 96 F150, 300, automatic, 2wd. The truck doesn't get used much...well, we live in wisconsin, they're looking at moving to Tennessee in a couple months and need the truck for hauling they're belongings down there...2 weeks ago they took it down there with a trailer full of belongings...well it rained like all hell through Illinois and kentucky...they got where they were going that night...the next day they were driving and the truck just died...started up 10-15 minutes later...he called me and I thought it sounded like a problem I had on my 88 F150 way back when...the EEC relay was toast...well, he's gone through and replaced relays, the truck still dies every now and again...today it left him stranded for an hour before it started...it's not posting any codes on the computer, he hooked up the scanner to it today...we replaced the distributor before they went to TN also...the cap hadn't been changed for so long the screws had siezed in there and broke off...

Any thoughts and ideas as to what to check would bre greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
Phil

When you replaced the distributor, I bet it was with a REBUILT. (I'm not sure if you could find a new distributor). Rebuilt distributors have a terrible reputation, they have had for years. My first guess would be that you have a bad PIP in your distributor. You could also have a bad coil or ignition module. Anyway I would guess one of those three ignition components is temporarily going dead. Beings the distributor was recently replaced, I would suspect the PIP in there first.

Thanks for the input...I forgot about checking the coil also....but that's interesting about the PIP....I may end up seeing if I can fix the old distributor for him and put it back in.

Thanks!

Ok, he replaced the coil this morning....took it into town and the truck left him sitting for 2 hours at Wally World...he took the distributor out today and will swap it with another tomorrow.

The truck never did this until he tuned it up and replaced the distributor...so it may be the culprit after all.

Thanks!
Phil
