Slight problem

I picked up my Slick yesterday and it was beautiful. I'll get some pics up here soon, tonight possibly.

I was driving and it was shifting fine (3 on the tree) then when I stopped, I couldn't get it out of third gear. I limped back to the shop, opened the hood and looked where the doohickeys, I guess they are the linkage, connect to the steering shaft. I pulled the one closest to the firewall up and sprayed brake cleaner on it to loosen the grime then sprayed some lithium on it. Then, I worked the shifter and it worked fine again.

The Fantasy Goddess and I went on a date last night and took the truck. Everything was fine. Decided to drive the old truck to work this morning and halfway to work, it stuck in third again. I had no lubricant with me so I limped to the Kroger and got some WD40. After a lot of spraying, it worked again.

I don't want to have to go through this again. What would you guys do? I'm no mechanic but I want to be able to fix this truck myself. It's not a money thing, I just want to learn.

Dude, are you serious? I think people are fed up with your attitude. Both from the other thread and now this one. Give people a chance to see your post, think about it, and possibly respond.

Fix your cab mounts, and readjust to spec the rods and linkages, including steering column.

Thanks Grabz2,

I had a guy look at it this morning and I cleaned it up with a soft brush and some break free. Instead of spray grease, I used some regular lithium grease to lube it and it's shifting a lot smoother. This weekend I'll take your advice and try my luck adjusting everything. I just drove her to the store and she was great.

I'm having fun with the truck even though she's left me hanging twice in two days. At least it's nothing expensive...not yet anyway.

As they say in the South, Bless Your Heart, Masterqi.

Most of us have jobs we go to for at least 8 hrs. Please forgive us if we don't get back to you promptly. Sarcasm aside, I can understand your enthusiasm for your new ride, but most of us aren't masters of all things Slick related - give the proper people time to respond and they will.

You might want to invest in an 1965 shop manual. They are in reprint or on CD, and are very very helpful on all aspects of your truck, big or small. Not cheap, but neither is being broke down all the time!

Thanks, Sam..I understand. You are correct. I am excited about my new truck.

My desire is to make this a daily driver. I have seven children and in an attepmt to simplify my life, we sold our huge house, sold my Hummer, and really got down to the basics of life. This truck is the essence of what we are doing. From a 75,000 car to a 2600 truck is a huge deal. But the title is in the safe and I couldn't be happier. But you're right. I'm probably a little over the top with enthusiasm.

I took the Fantasy Goddess out for a date last night in the truck. We had the windows down and since the truck has no radio, we were able to have a conversation. It was very nice. She is more enthusiastic than I am. As a matter of fact, she has gone and purchased some stuff for the truck off of ebay...my favorite being a mint condition 1965 Georgia license plate for the truck.

I will download some pictures to photobucket tonight and you can see this beauty.

I am very appreciative to those here who have shown patience with this ol' country boy. I look forward to meeting some of you all soon. I may have to start an F100 club here in North Georgia.

THAT'S what I'M talkin' about!

I love the ol' sled. On the way home I stopped for gas. A police cruiser pulled up behind me. I was thinking, "What did I do?" The cop got out and asked me if it was for sale! Said he'd been wanting one since he was 16. I told him, "Me too! I just got this one!" He gave me his card and told me to call him if I ever wanted to sell it.

Gotta love the Slick!

Mine is Tropical Turquoise Inside and out. It has a TT seat as well. Can't wait to do work on her.

Seeker -- When I bought my '66 F250 just a short while ago I noticed the shifter linkage under the hood was brand new. Well, at least it LOOKS brand new. I know NOTHING about acquiring the linkage OR changing the linkage (fortunately, I don't have a shifting problem) but I have heard that as these trucks get on in the years the shifting linkage tends to bind up. You may want to replace the whole thing. Not sure if it's a smart approach and if it's not you'll be able to tell by the next few posts!! LOL!

Seven kids? Do you KNOW what's causing it? Yeah, I'd have ditched the Hummer a long time ago. You should probably install bus seats in the bed of your slick!

Yeah, I know what causes it...if you were as good as it as I am YOU'D have seven kids!

this truck is kind of a starting point in the middle of my life, if that makes any sense. The Fantasy Goddess and me are seeing life differntly than we have ever seen it. "Things" don't matter so much anymore. What's cool is tha tthe kids are all on board with this, too. My next project is an old bus that I am going to turn into an RV for vacations. I'm looking for an old tour bus, like a 50's or 60's model. I actually saw George Jones' first tour bus for sale for $6000 online the other day. I think it would be cool to have an old bus like that headed down to the coast with the slick on a tow dolly behind it.

As far as the linkage goes, it doesn't look too complicated to replace. Anyone here ever do it? Where would you find parts?

The only other issue is that I have no brakes on one front wheel so when I brake, it turns hard to the left. Any ideas on that?

Probably the rubber line has swollen and needs replacement, bleeding in order.. etc./.. BUT.. DO THE BRAKES.. all the lines(metal/rubber), wheel cylinders, master cyl, and shoes etc.. will run you about 150 if you do it yourself. I's easy stuff I just did it. Best money you'll spend on it... cause if you cant stop it don't drive it.

With all due respect... :-)

I believe you said you're new at all of this so IF you do decide to do the brake overhaul yourself I suggest you take a digital camera (unless you've replaced it with a Kodachrome already!) and take a picture of the springs and cylinder BEFORE you take it all apart. Makes it easier on figuring out how it all goes back together...

Oh - I'm just as good - but it does appear that my TIMING is better! LOL!

Hey Gillseeker, good job on attaining that old F100.

I would recommend that you took it easy on the truck for a while until you know every little idiosyncrasy of the vehicle. I noticed you said that you drove it to a couple dates and to work pretty much after having just bought it, and you said you WERE HAVING TROUBLE WITH SHIFTING. If you have another vehicle, use that for important daily tasks (like getting to work) for now, and get used to the truck on the side until you are totally comfortable with how to drive it and know what to do and not do with it.

Just my 2 cents! --Matt
