I was looking on the owners manual of my truck and it said that Manual tranny uses ATF, and for some reason I believe that is wrong, secondly I would like to know what fluid I should use in my differentials ( front and rear). I want to do a full fluid change but don't know where to start. I bought the Haynes book but that does not tell me what are the fluids that I should use.
Okay..so you read the owners manual..and it told you what to put in it...but you don't believe it, so..yea.
A lot of people stopped reading right there.. I can tell you ATF all day, if you don't take what the OWNERS MANUAL says...why would you listen to a bunch of people you don't know on a forum? Think about it...
5 speed use ATF, 4 speeds took 85/90...yours takes ATF. Not sure why that is so hard to believe....
Although I would (and do) use Royal Purple Synchromax for manual transmissions and T-cases that call for ATF, but thats just me...
I remember reading a ZF TSB that was put out in the early 90's in regards to the S542 tranny. Something about there not being enough clearance for heavy weight gear oil, and it makes it difficult to shift into gear. Plus, when it gets hot, it turns to crud. I have a feeling that the syntetic gear oil from royal purple is pretty good in these respects. I may try it, next time i change fluids. How expensive is it?
depends on where you get it, mstromni, but around here about 12 bucks a quart. Some others I've seen have had it as high as 16 though..considering the quality, how long it lasts between changes, and the cost of replacing a neglected tranny, it is money well spent, IMO.
This doesn't apply to trucks but when i bought my Mustang racecar it had gear oil in manual trans, but shifted hard, seemed slow and was a real bear to push. Finally looked up in repair manual found that it needed atf. Flushed changed fluid, what a difference. I always use 80/90 in rear ends.
I don't have the same trucks as ya'll, and I probably don't have the same rearend. I have a Ford 9in, what do you guys have, the 8.8's? Either way, I have some Lucas synthetic either 75/90 or 80/90, can't remember right off hand. Would this be ok to use in my rearend?
Hey thanx for the reply drained the fluid and it is ATF for my surprise. Apparently aluminum manual tranny use ATF. Never ran across it. Noticed I have a small leak on the rear main seal how hard is it to get to it and should I drop the whole tranny and replace both seal?
