I've got some serious rust pitting issues going on at the front section of the cab where the wipers are. It's actually that entire area down to where the emblems are. The PO had it covered in primer and it was starting to leak through.
I'm taking the paint off, but am wondering what to do about the pitting and the rust that's left?
I've heard that the Rust Bullet works, but can you buy it somewhere or only from their site?
I'll get some photos up when I find some batteries for the camera.
What year truck is it??? They started using galvanized parts in 77 (maybe earlier for some parts) and this includes the cowl. If so it probablly be cleaned up with 100 grit on a sander. Because it's gavanized some paints and primers do not stick well to it. Once the old is cleaned off to the matal , a good etching primer with Zinc should be appied over the metal before a top primer or paint.
Get ahold of a spot type sand blaster. Its the easiest and most effective way to remove all the rust. Take your time and use pressures around 80 to 90 to minimize warping. Go to the auto parts store and spend a little time with the resident paint guru and ask him about vinyl etch primer. All the pros I know use it. You will will also need to topcoat that with a good quality epoxy primer sealer. This is what I do and I have had excellent luck.
