89 steering column problem

1989 Bronco
5.0 302 V8
Tilt steering

I had a small problem that has become a MAJOR problem.

My ignition (key) stopped working forcing me to start the truck at the solenoid. This happened about 3 weeks ago. That is minor problem to me.

Today the problem has gotten worse. ALOT worse.

Now I can not shift gears at all. The tranny shifts fine under the truck. It appears that it is bound up in the column. I could find no reference to the workings of the column in my Hayes manual. So I ask........ is the column a hard thing to work on? Or should I send to a pro?

Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem may be? Or how I should resolve it.

I thank you in advance for your expert help.

Dave

The biggest problem I have seen is right at the top
from the tilt pivot up. It sounds one of the rod coming off the
lock cylinder came off or there is a dog leg that moves up
and down as you turn the key.

Would this be visible by removing the steering wheel?

Problem fixed

b4hntn

Thank you for posting that helpful article.

My problem was the same as the one shown.

What had caused me to not be able to shift was the broken piece had slid down and was blocking the shifter.

Thanks again.

Glad it worked out. I have not enjoyed that experience YET but had saved it as a favorite back when an intermitted dying issue was tearing me up. Always happy to share what I don't know when I can find it somewhere if that makes sense.

Now you don't have to worry about that issue again.
