im resotring a 74 f-100 2wd, and im sitting there looking at the coil springs side by side, and one is about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch taller than the other. im just wondering if this is how they are suppose to be, or should i get new springs? if this is normal, which side does the taller one go on and why?
also the kingpins are seized, do they only come out one way? and tips tricks on getting them out? the only reason i want to take them out is so i can
por-15 the knuckle.
The driver side spring might be slightly shorter then the passenger side over time, due to the drivers weight and some other things always being on that side of the truck. If you can afford it you could get new ones and have a better ride.
As for the king pins, If you can get grease in all the fittings better to leave them in there. If they wont take grease then your looking at heating up the area on the knuckle around the pin and driving the pins out (brass Punch). They come out either end you just have to remove the locking bolt and the caps on both ends that have the grease nipples. If you hve to do all that try not mess up the threads on the Knuckle that the grease caps thread into (I did that and now have to fix it so that I can put grease in with out the cap coming out) You will also need to put in new King pins and have the bushings reamed out (Cost me around $136.00 to have it done at a well known place, plus the cost of new pins)
I'd do the rust prevention on the exposed parts, and leave the kingpins alone if they are taking grease and fully functional. That's one job that can be either a cakewalk...or a huge pain in the rear end.
Like was said before, either heat the knuckle and I beam and then beat it out or if worse comes to worse you'll have to aquire a slice torch and burn it out.
I did one and had to use a slice torch, the next truck I took it in. It was several years ago, but I believe it cost around $300 to have the pins replaced.
Well worth it if ya have the cash.
A slice torch set-up (brand name Air-Arc) is around $700
ill think i will grease the kingpins and see how they turn, one turns kind of rough, and i don't really know of the condition because we bought the truck as a parts truck, and if they don't smooth out i will use the other set on the good truck.
if it does smooth out, ill just clean it as best as i can, por-15 and see how it goes, yeah i don't feel like spending that kind of cash for kingpins and bushings. and i don't like the whole idea of not doing it myself. lol
anywhos, that solves that problem.
but the springs will not be reused. i just kinda wanted to salvage them after removing all the rust with electrolysis, i felt proud.
any reccomendations on springs? Im wanting stock height.
thanks for all the replys.
by the way, getting the frame sandblasted tomm, ill post some pics in a few days.
