engine idle question

Another probably zany question from me please bear with me as i just got my 7.3 idi last friday. first off this truck works wonderfully i just had her down to work today with the crew and all went well. Now this little question of the idle when cruising down the road with the o/d on about 55mph say im taching about 1700 more or less when i lift off the pedal the tach drops back to an even 600 rpm quite quickly and the truck just seems to coast along. is this normal. my concern is shouldn't the engine carry a little back pressure showing a higher rpm. I intend to use this rig to pull my 32 camper and am worried on mountains or grades that the motor wont help me haul the load down. is this a concern or just way diesels do?? thanks for bearing with meoh i should mention its e40d i think

The coast clutch on mine seams to free wheel as well when in overdrive, normal -I believe. If you want some engine hold back, cancel the OD by pushing the button on the end of the shift lever, a light OD light will come on on the end of the lever and you will notice some coasting resistance. When towing that kind of load you will be kicked down or selected to 3rd gear anyway. Post some more info on your truck- year, rear gear ratio, turbo ??. To tow that much weight with an E4OD you should have a big tranny cooler installed if you don't have one already. Lots of free good advice to be had here!

Thanks for the advise My new old truck is 91 f-350 xlt lariat crew cab 2wheel drive straight job. has the 7.3 idi with overload bags. not sure about rear end yet do these rears still have tag i.d or is on the door jamb. pretty sure the tranny is a e4od im gonna check trans cooler next. That makes sense now that you mention that about the o.d I guess when im towing my 32 foot camper @ 7,200 lbs i should have the o.d turned off. now next ? I tow my camper upstate pa in some pretty big mountains will it be ok while descending to pull the trans lever back to 2 for more help. or will this overtach the motor. I mean i guess i could just use the trailer brakes a little. wadda ya think? thanks boots
