Where to start?

Engine light came on, had the codes read P0171 and P0174. Engine runs rough at idle. It has even cut off a few times. Where should I start?

tafy5, start with IAC valve or pcv tubing. Try a search of the codes you listed and you'll find hundreds of relevant discussions.

I had both of these codes at the same time. Turned out to be a crack in the elbow of the pvc tube where it meets up with the intake manifold.

A Haynes manual will cross reference all codes.

that last plug

I was having one of the codes ( I don't remember which) and I took it to my mechanic who found the last plug (all the way back on the driver side) had never been changed (140K+). He changed the plug which I understand is a real **&&^#^$ and everything is fine.

I think the rear on the passenger side is the worse. You sure it was the drivers side?

Question

I cleaned the MAF. If there was a leak in a tube would there be suction at the PCV valve?

The "PCV valve" doesn't create "suction" as you put it. It vents pressure to a vacuum source(suction) which is your intake manifold. A fault here would cause you to run lean on both banks which is what I guess your 2 DTCs say your O2s are telling you without looking them up. Handle your MAF with kid gloves. They are very delicate. You need to look for something that's common between Bank 1 and Bank 2.
