I bought a 390 that is supposed to be good . If i do a compression test what should it be or close to any way it looks real good and it dont look like it it has been long since some one has done some work to it this is a complete motor

The rule of thumb I heard first is all cylinders within 10% of each other. I've also heard 20% and 25%, but always had good service from one that was within 10%.

You can have good comp and still have other issues. But hopefully it's a good runner. If it's on a stand now would be a good time to decide if looking at the crank end play/bearings/wrist pin/timing set etc.. is worth a few extra $$ in gaskets before plopping that sucker in there. Just my .02
