how much oil pressure is "normal"?

Hello friends,
I am wondering how much oil pressure is normal for a 302 with intake, and headers. I'm running about 55 psi cold, and 30-35 psi when hot. Also, if I am a little low on oil, will this make the oil pressure drop? I know this may seem elementary, but I figured i'd ask instead of making uneducated assumptions.

As always, Thank you!

The oil pressure will be different on different engines depengine on milage, type of filter, and the weight of the oil. Your numbers sound fine though. I here people say there oil pressure drops when they are low on oil but theoretically the oil pressure shouldn't change unless it's so low that the oil pump is sucking air.

I was told by a professional engine builder that 10 psi per 1000 rpms is sufficent for just about any engine. Big blocks benefit more from high pressure pumps, while small blocks do from high volume pumps. I don't think being a little low on oil will cause a drop in pressure as long as the pickup tube has plently of oil around it. Thicker oil tends to hold a bit more pressure than thinner oil too.

The reason your oil pressure will decrease when your low on oil is the temperature of the oil increases. As temperature increases viscosity decreases changing the flow characteristics of the oil and the resulting line pressure.
