Motor I.D

I just purchased a parts truck, small v-8 and 4 speed not original.
I think it is a 289 but I need help being certain and have no idea what year it might be or what I need to know to get the right parts.
This is what I have so far...
On the intake manifold- C40E
engraved tag on the intake manifold reads like this...
289 65 7
5-C 550-J
on the block, driver side rear just above oil pan in a circular pattern, and I am not sure where it starts- 3.1975 (date?)
on the block, passenger side rear above oil pan it looks like this
CSDE 8015-C could be 6015-C
All help is appreciated, Thanks. Owen

Hey Owen,

If no one has monkeyed with it internally, it appears you have a 64-65 vintage 289. A very good engine indeed. If you don't plan to keep it, it should sell very well. If you do intend to keep it, and it's in good shape, tune it up and it will provide years of trouble-free service. 289- "absolutley one of Ford's better ideas!"

How many bolts hold the bell housing to the engine? Early 289"s only had 5. Anybody know when they went to 6?

my 1967 289 has five so they might have went to six when they switched to a 302. It still bolted up to a 6 bolt housing though so i wouldnt worry about that one bolt too much.

Owen,

Sounds like a 65 289. The C4OE is a 1964 casting number ( C=196X, so C4 is 1964), and the CSDE is really C5DE and that's a 1965 casting number. Is this a 4bbl engine? The letter -C keeps appearing, so that could be a
'C code' 289 4bbl.

As the other poster noted, this will have the early bell housing bolt pattern.

Best regards,
