OK, I'm confused. I have a 1990 F250 4x4 with 302. I have a bad 4-speed in it. I am looking for a replacement and have been told numerous things, half the guys I talk to say its a T-18 and half say its a T-19. ITS A 4-Speed and 1st gear is geared very low. what the heck is my tranny? second question.... is a np435, T-19 and a T-18 all compatible bolt in transmissions for my truck? So I could just find any one of these 3 trannies and bolt it right in?. Thanks
Really you could put any transmission in there you want. If it was me I'd go for a
ZF 5 speed. They can be had with the small bolt pattern (from a 351w/ho powered F250), and the only things that need changed are the tranny mount, and drive shaft. Everything else should work just fine and you'll gain an overdrive for highway travel.
I would say you have a t-18 in there. There should be a 13-01 cast into the drivers side of the case. I would stick the the t-18 because they are alot tougher than the ZF and you should be able to rebuild it pretty cheap. Overdrive in 3/4 ton would probably bog down the old 302 pretty good anyways where you wouldnt notice the increase in fuel mileage unless you had a 30mph tail wind.
Negative....it SHOULD be a T-19 if it's got the heavier rearend (fullfloater) and a T-18 if it's the lighter duty. The NP435 is an excellent transmission and I'd rather have it than the BW's but it is also a manual linkage tranny as the BW's are hydraulic linkage....stay with the BW it's just easier to do that swap.Another thing that would help is some numbers on it whether it be a tag or cast into the case.Luck
The only difference between the t-18 and t-19 is the ratios are closer together and 1st gear is sycronized in the t-19, strength is the same. The NP435 in 83-86 F150-350 have hydraulic clutch setups. Both the T-18,T19, NP 435 can handle 500HP easy.
Ahhh makes me think of another wya to tell the difference...the t-18 will grind when you try to put it into first clutch in but not completely stopped spinning...the t-19 will go in easy as pie..that's a great link...rather have the np435 hands down.....and the fact that those years have hydraulic clutches is all fine and dandy...I've never seen one in those years personally...that mean....I've never see the NP435 for those years.JMT
