I have a 5.0L EFI and in process of replacing the valve cover gaskets.
I would like some opinions on what kind of gasket material is best cork or rubber? Also, the best gasket sealer, if any, would be best to use?
Thanks in advance for any info.
Don
Silicone is best. I have a silicone oil pan gasket and it is reusable and does not require adhesive or RTV. Guarenteed not to leak. My gasket is made by Felpro. I also have one on my wife's automatic tranny. I am sure that they make valve cover gaskets out of the same stuff.
This'll probably start a feud but there are two lines of thinking as far as gasket sealers go. One says any variant of RTV/silicone sealer. The other says none (my personal belief). When I replace valve cover gaskets and the like I use the yellow weatherstripping adhesive (also called elephant snot) but it's only to keep the gasket in place while putting the covers on. It has no sealing properties of it's own. The problem with a silicon sealant is that it COULD allow a gasket to move when pressure is applied to it.
I agree with swirk.........get Felpro gaskets.
Just my $.02.
I have the cast aluminum covers and I have had problems getting them to seal. I used cork, ruber with a metal crush plate, thicker cork, and finally, my mechanic bought some metal/rubber gaskets from Ford that work great!!!
HEY fellows- thanks for the inputs. I got some the silicone gaskets and they look great even if their price is higher. Just did not want to do the job twice.
Thanks again
Don:-)
Hey Hotwhlz why not use Hi-Tack to keep the gaskets in place? Cost much less and it comes in brush (elephant snot) or spray on applications. Just a thought. Plus it's not so toxic to your health.
It's one of those "that's what I learned to use and have always done it that way" things. You know, being on auto-pilot when you do certain things although there may be a better way.
