[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Apr-02 AT 04:55 PM (EST)]I can also get a new X303 cam for $125. Will that fit if the 351W if it has the same firing order as my engine? Thanks again.
airharley, What year is your 351? You can convert it to a roller cam but it's not trivial. If the 351 is something like a 94-97 with an F4TE casting number, then you can use a 302HO cam and lifters, together with the spider, H-bars, and hold down screws to convert the block to a roller cam. You'll also have to change the distributor gear and the valve springs and use the right push rods.
If you are using an older 351, you may have to modify the heads by replacing the press-in rocker studs with bolt down or screw in rocker hardware. And you'll have to use a custom cam with a 'reduced base circle' to keep the lifters in the bores.
I am looking for parts for my 398 stroker engine. I will be buying World heads with the 2.02 intake, 1.60 exhaust, and 7/16 screw rocker studs. That will take care of the heads. So far this is what I have figured for my stroker so far.
Bore 4.060 Stroke 3.85 Head Volume 64cc Flat Top Pistons 0cc
Valve Reliefs 2cc ConRod 5.956 Comp Height 1.585 Deck 9.5
Piston to deck .034
I get a compression ratio of 10.9 to 1. I was thinking of using 10cc dished pistons to reduce the compression a little bit but I am unsure at this time. That would give me 10 to 1 compression. (If I use the 1.608 Comp Height I get 11.5 to 1) Not to good for normal use. The over all cubes is 398.7 cid.
As far as the cam goes I am still in the process of getting ideas and info for what is best for this beast. I know I do want something that I can idle with but make the engine scream to life when the tree turns green. Make any sense? Why would I have to use a custom cam with a reduced base circle? Is the 351W cam have bigger lobes or with the base circles interfer with the movement of the roller lifters?
