In transplanting a fresh 302 in my 74 F-100 I have found a copper tube, about 1" in diameter, that connects to each head at the back by the firewall. It bolts in and carrys exaust from on side to the other. It was originally a "T" but the extra leg has been severed and pinched off. Does this have a purpose anymore? I have a lightly modified engine going in with a mild cam, head work and edlebrock manifold and 4 barrel. Thanks for any input.
The cross over pipe you are refering to is for smog/emmisions. Best thing to do right now is to take the pipe off and plug up the hole in each head. That way you wont have to deal with a "exhaust leak" later down the road. I plugged mine up when I did a head replacement.
I have an 84 351 HO with this same pipe idea connecting the back of the heads, there was a nosel where it connected to the EGR on the carb. plate, since all this had been disconnected, we decided to fix this as it was a direct exhaust leak into my engine compartment, so trying to torque the pipe fitting off we busted the pipe....oops. So I just unbolted it, we cleaned it up a little bit, found freeze plugs and put them in there and stuck the thing back on there, it worked fine, and it sounds much better now without the exhaust leak. Theres a real easy way to fix that problem though, just go to the store and buy two freeze plugs that will fit and its like, 79 cents. 9 cents for the plugs and 70 cents for the baggy they come it I hope this helps.
