Hi Guys,
This question isnt psd related its about my 2000 ranger. I didnt get much response over in the ranger forums so id firgure id ask you guys. A few weeks ago I was driving along and out of no where I lost drive. When I tried to accelerate it had nothing, just squealed in drive. Soon after the squealing stopped. I scanned it and came up with nothing. Oh, and reverse works fine. It has a 4R44E auto 4x4.
Any help would be great before I go and order a new tranny for it.
Thanks.
Steve
It's time to change fluid and have a look around. If you find dark oil (smells burnt) and "junk" inside that's bad news. If you find metal shavings, um, that's even worse.
Usually when one hears a "whining" noise the first thing I suspect is the front pump, and when it goes, it usually showers the internals with metal shavings. Steel from the pump circulating in ATF acts much like a fragmentary grenade destroying everything inside an automatic transmission.
What about the torque converter clutches? Could they be shot?
Sure they could. But that won't cause the problem you're having.
Since it moves in reverse the torque converter is fine. Your problem is a mcechanical breakage inside the trans. If I had to guess I'd say it is the forward clutch, but without taking it apart I can't be sure.
Don't bother changing the fluid. At this point that's a waste of money. That trans has to come out and be rebuilt or replaced.
