Wow....well thats a pretty much open question? What would you like to know about the 428's

There are so many Variables with stock and aftermarket parts out now..That the sky is the limit with these FE's.....

But In a nutshell there basically a 390 with a 4.130" bore and a 3.980" stroke, and in stock trim would produce anywhere from 325hp to 345hp depending on Cam, heads, Intake, and Carb set-up...and most have the HD crank saddle webbing in them for more support.

And the 390's and 427's were internally balanced and the 428's were externally balanced via the flexplate (automatic) or the Flywheel (stick shift) and the harmonic balancer.....

Mustang 428 Cobra Jet Registry scroll down to the component ID section. That will bring you to a list of parts and descriptions. Keep in mind it's mostly about the CJ/SCJ 428's.

428 Thunder Jet 345 hp @ 4600 and 462 ft/lb @ 2800 10.5 to 1
428 PI 360 hp @ 5400 and 459 ft/lb @ 3200 10.5 to 1
428 CJ/SCJ 335 hp @ 5200 and 440 ft/lb @ 3400 10.6 to 1

The CJ hp numbers were an insurance fib as the auto trans cars shifted,in drive at 6000 rpm at WOT. The hp numbers were closer to 425 @6000. The TJ and PI had a 600 CFM Holley carb whil the CJ/SCJ had a 735 CFM Holley. The TJ and CJ/SCJ had iron manifolds whilethe PI had aluminum. The CJ manifold as a coy of the PI manifold.

Stock 428s were rated at 345 hp @ 4600. Unless the motor continues to pull even stronger past that, then the cam is stock and the 600 is the right carb. Over carburation on street engines losses more performance than they gain.

lean at idle, off idle, cruise or WOT? What's your timing and advance curve look like? How do you know it's running lean?

Did you do a clean shut off? That's where you drive down the highway, either cruise or WOT and just turn the key off and kick it out of gear and coast to a stop. Then pull the plugs and check them, any other way just shows you what is going on at idle, which doesn't matter as long as the engine idles fine.
