overdrive not disengaging

95 xlt, 5.0, 4r70w. I went to push in the button on the shifter to disengage overdrive but nothing happens. It stays in overdrive and the light doesn't come on. How do I go about diagnosing this to see where the problem is?

take the switch apart.

the wires come loose.

disconnect battery when playing with electrical connections.

If the wires are OK then try cleaning the switch with contact cleaner.

If the light goes off and on with the switch the switch is working.
