I have a 3 horse horizontal shaft motor that I am tired of dealing with points on. I was wondering if the flywheel and coil off a 3.5 horse vertical motor will fit on it and upgrade it to electronic. This is not the antique 3 pole coil it has two poles. I know I can buy a magnatron upgrade kit but I can get the blown push mower engine free to rob parts off of if they will work.
I agree. But I never knew there were different flywheel keys for Briggs engines. I know Tecumseh has about a dozen different flywheel keys, but I have only ever seen the one version for Briggs engines. This is surprising news to me, Glenn!

When they went to electronic ignition they changed the material of the flywheel key and it is the only key you can buy now.
If you had a old engine with points the old key was raw aluminum and the new key(electronic) is a aluminum alloy.
If you have the old points key and use it with electronic ignition there is a chance it will kick back and shear.
Just one of those things you learn when you were young and never forget!
