I've a good word for a rebuilt item I had done once by a little shop in a little town in North Carolina. I think the towns claim to fame is that it's the birthplace of Randy Travis. Anyway, my motor home has a 300 amp alternator and on the way to the drag races in Rockingham the alternator quit just as I was passing through this little wide spot in the road. Found the shop right there on 74, this alternator is so big it is nearly a 2 man job to get it in and out. But in less than 2 hours I was back on the road with it rebuilt and it is still working fine 6 years later.
Hey, after the search for a starter built in the U.S.A. I found that most (maybe 98%) of the NEW starters are built in China. However, many of the rebuilt starters are reworked here in the U.S. so I can see how some of the rebuilt starters last longer or if you go to a Starter/Alternator repair shop, the rework will likely last longer, also.
For that matter - an electric motor and alternator REWIND shop can actually build you a tougher starter than the original.
I can bet you'll love it.I couldn't believe how much faster the engine cranked over.I'm sure some of it was the stock one was obviously tired. But I'll be buying high torques from now on.
Just an update in case someone searches for this same thing in the future hopefully it helps.
I put the new starter in after work Wednesday night after work. It fit but just barely so i ground about 1/4" off of the frame cross member and had to straighten the ends of the cables. Other than that it went in great. Spins the motor over like a wore out 4 banger. Also the shipping was fast and shipped the same day. I would recommend this starter to anyone that needs a replacement.
I'm tempted to order one,my truck has been starting punily for a while and been trying to figure if it is starter or new wally batteries
his stock starters are reasonable and would probly last the life of the truck or me
Well if it ends up being the starter definitely go for the big boy.But keep in mind you'll probably have to trim 1/4"of the cross member. Its no big deal relay.I fit it in there with out trimming enough. When I went to start it the motor shook a bit and banged against the member. But as he stated its a beast.
dryfly,
I have seen others post that same reply about having to grind of 1/4" of the cross member.
However, the same starter slipped right up into the hole at the flywheel and there was adequate clearance without grinding. Now, I would like to have had some more, but it fit as delivered and no grinding.
Oh well,
Yes it was extremely close to making it in mine,But just not enough.I'm guessing if my motor sits in its mounts an 1/8th in closer to the front thats the difference.I dunno just guessing.
