Remote start/alarm systems

I am getting my new diesel soon and one of the first things i want to do is install a remote-start, and so i figure i might as well do a alarm/starter combo. what brnd would youguys recomend? i like th key fobs with the picture of your vehicle, and any doors that are open, lights that are on, etc. i thing the one's ive seen are made by Viper. are these quality? are they hard to install? would it be worth it to pay someone to put it in so i don't have to mess with it, or would it be better to do it myself and save the money? i am trying to build a truck that i will be happy with for 20+ years, i want it done right, the first time, i want everything to be uniform, match, etc. i'm starting with a stock f.250 with a 7.3, what should i do?

Mine was around 399.00 installed for the viper 5900, not cheap but cheaper than a deductable payment or worse no truck, plus the added benefits- remote start, turbo cool down, paging, etc. let us know what you end up with. I just chalked it up to that dreaded PMS!!
On a side note I was told the Viper systems have to be installed by an authorized dealer although I have heard otherwise since. If you go to viper dot com you can see all their systems and also get a list of authorized dealers

I also have the viper 5900 and I believe that it is worth it. Viper(from my experiance) has always had a solid reputation for alarm systems. I would, however, have someone install it as they tend to be a little bit of a headach for people that don't do it on a regular basis, so I believe it's worth the extra money to avoid that and I'm not the best went it comes to that type of install stuff as it is.

Just got the viper 5900 installed a couple weeks ago. And am loving it, and its true that it has to be installed by an authorized dealer. They aren't allowed to sell the product by itself.

Best Buy is a dealer.

No difference between the 7900 and the 5900 other then the bling of the remote. Same range on the remote and the same features(remote start, turbo timer etc).

I would recommend getting a scanner installed at the same time. Its an extra few bucks ,but worth it. I have mine installed in the center between the dash and windshield. The regular flashing light is on the dash just left to the steering wheel. The scanner is more visible ,and lets people know you have an alarm installed.

One more thing . About the remotes.I dont know what kind or style of clothes ,or what kind of work you do. But make sure you will feel comfortable with the 5900 key fob in your pocket. I have a similar viper key fob ,and chose to use the regular key fob just for comfort reasons. Im an active person ,and it just didnt feel good in my pockets. Plus if I was to break it. The cost was like 200 bucks to replace it. I kind of wish I didnt pay the extra for the extra bling . Just my 2 cents

I got a brand new 5900 LCD remote off Ebay for $90 shipped. Don't waste $$$ buying a remote from the dealer.

I hear what your saying about the remote, its pretty big.

Autopage is another good one. That is what I have and I love it. Just like the viper but a few bucks cheaper. That thing has helped me chase of someone trying to break into my truck. Didnt help once but that is my dumb a$$ fault, I forgot to lock it so they got the radio and DVD player. They remotes are very similar.
