Today some kind of humming started with my truck, you can only hear it when your stopped or in park, and you can only hear it when your in the truck. Its not real loud but I cant figure out what it is. I also thought I smelled something burning. Im suspecting the tranny maybe but its shifting fine. Anyone possibly experienced something like this? Its got me worried..
Do you hear it with the key on, engine off? Use a large handled screwdriver as a stethoscope to try and isolate the source of the sound. A DC relay that's starting to fry or some type of short circuit might emit such a sound.
Just be careful poking your stethoscope around those fuses & relays. For some reason the Three Stooges come to mind when I picture myself trying this approach.
Gene, wouldn't you be able to feel heat or vibration just by using your finger if it's a relay?
Well guys after burning my hand I found out what the humming and burning smell was. ALTERNATOR. I was poking around my motor while it was running and leaned my hand on the alternator, it was scorching hot and burned the palm of my hand pretty good. I knew that wasnt right, so I smelled it and that was the burning smell that was coming in the cab. So Im sure thats whats causing the humming.
Is alright to get an alternator from the parts store, (autozone, checker) or should I get one from ford?
I think things like alternators are pretty much a crap shoot. I've got one from Autozone on my truck that's been there for the last 20k miles or so with no problems. I've had one from NAPA go bad in 2 months on a previous truck.
If you've got the time see if there is a place near by that rebuilds them on site. If not then just go with what you can find. It will either last a long time or fail quickly.
Hey Chris, saw a bumper sticker this morning....said,,,,Bad decisions limit future options........Immediatly thought of your tag line.
You know, if I hadn't lived it, it wouldn't ring so true to me. Of course the scary part is when you have kids and they reach the age where you knew what you were doing then.
Of course I'm still gaining experience and hoping more good judgment comes my way soon.

What ever suits your needs but buy from a place that can bench test the new one before you leave. I always do. It's a real pisser to install one only to find out its bad right out of the box. My 2 cents.
They had an alternator for the ambulance package, should I go with one of those?? would it have a higher output?
The ambulance package is actually two alternators that run 110 amps each IIRC. The stock alt should be the same 110 amp too. The link Ron gave is a good place for higher output ones.
