well a while ago when it was raining this light came on...it ran like it was falling on its face....was recommended here to use dioelectric grease on the cam postion sensor plug...did all the sensors with the grease...nothing...changes the cam position sensor...nothing...changed the exhaust back pressure sensor and new tube and cleaned out exhaust manifold before installing ...nothing...new fuel filter...nothing....nothing meaning still running bad....went to garage to pull codes...no codes came up....engine service light only comes on when engine is running...does anyone have any ideas of am i going to the dreeded ford dealer to get this straightened out???.....HELP PLEASE!!!!
I read you changed the CPS but, I had the exact same problem with mine. The truck would run horrible, light on, no codes. The problem was progressive, in that it would happen more frequently as time passed. Changed CPS, problem gone.
Like these guys said. Find a PSD code reader. "Seems" I have read a loose UVC harness does throw a certain code involving #8 injector, or it could be throwing some other code. Ford will do it, but it is around $100. Throw in a little more and get your own reader.
You will find that the right tools, and joining FTE, will turn you into a PSD pro.
Just test the pins that stay in the valve cover. If you want to check the unplugged wires you'll need to dig into your drivers fender to find you IDM and check for continuity, but that's not a common problem.
well i checked with the ohm meter with the plugs off the valve covers and it all checks out...the ohms are in the perameters of what was stated...should i go inside the valve covers to take a look for chaffing or a loose connector....should i disconnect the commutor above the fender well to check for moisture....its been since march 11 since this happened and its been in the garage ....i am stumped on this one
I'm still going to recommend getting your codes read again. If you have a SEL then you should have a code. Most generic code reader will not read our codes.
Also, did you get your replacement CPS from Ford or is it an aftermarket?
cps is aftermarket...napa..echlin....the one that came out is black#0320..mc90....yes going for codes....this electronic stuff is enough to drive ya nuts
That's very possibly your problem. Many people here have found more problems with an after market CPS than the bad one they replaced. Go to Ford and get the new Gray one that cost around $30.00 and eliminate that problem.
yes i guess i will give that a try and get one gray one from ford
question..lets just say i go to ford to read the codes...roughly $300 to $400 to read codes...right??
i am thinking of going for the autoenginuity code reader and at least if something else goes wrong down the road i could deal with it for the cost of a ford dealer charging me everytime i go there...right??
so say i get this decoder with the psd software...can i read the codes on its own screen or do i need a laptop or something??
am i going in the right direction or am i just throwing money away...i just hate going to a dealer and buying parts i dont need which i am sure this goes on all the time
AE is a hardware/software product and requires a laptop, PDA or Palm for use. Still a good deal. I don't have one yet, but is on my list. It is a very good tool and will work on a lot of differant vehicles. If you know some one near you that has a Superchip programer for their truck, they could read you codes. I really wouldn't suprise me to see your problems go away when you change your CPS. Something about those aftermarket ones give lots of trouble.
If you've got $30 laying around, or a little less from some of our online sponsors who are dealers, then I swap the CPS before I spent all afternoon pulling valve covers apart. Hang on to your old one since it's a good idea to have a spare anyway.
The AE is a nice toy, but as Barry mentioned it needs to be hooked up to a laptop etc. It doesn't take a fancy laptop. You could probably find a deal on a used one if the AE is all you'll use it for. The cheapest place I've seen to get the AE is from Dennis here AutoEnginuity PC Scan Tool (USB)
I believe I have read here that you can pay ford dealership 1/2 hour labor to read the codes. But don't let them do anything else. You will leave with empty pockets and a big IOU.Get a printout with the codes and the guys here will have a much better clue at what the problem is.Good luck.
