I have a problem with an 89 E-150 w/ 302 and fuel injection. Started running like garbage. Drained about 5 gallons of GAS out of the oil pan. Took apart air cleaner and it ran ok. As soon as the air cleaner is reassembled, it starts running poorly. Its fuel injected, but you have to hit the gas to get it started, and then if you don't keep rpms over 2500, it dies. Replaced o2, and the catalytic convertor has been disconnected for a long time. Any ideas?? It seems to have something telling it to give more gas than necessary all the time!!! Help. Thanks.
Sounds like a stuck fuel injector to me. I had similar problem in 89 Mercury Cougar with 3.8 v-6.
With it I was able to do the cylinder test using a cheapo tool that I think you can do the same thing with a paperclip to find out which one it was. Don't let it do it for long, I wouldn't drive it, it is a dangerous situation, and can burn up a cat or do other damage.

check for vacuum leaks. I had a problem like that, the i had to rev. it above 200 rpm's to keep it running(though it would run very rough). i connected a pulled apart vacuum hose, and it worked. May also be a bad injector. pull the top connector off the injector, and ohm them out with a multimeter. they should read about 11.5 to 12 i think.... If they are below that relpace them(though u might want to check ohm specs. for your model and year). also check IAC to make sure it's not stuck. pull if off and wipe any carbon off that it has and spray it with carb. spray and losen it up. maybe also check TPS(throttle position sensor). That may be sending wrong signals. If your have access to All Data CD's, try the diagnosis section. I used it yesterday to diagnos a stalling 89' Olds. Supreme, and found it to be 2 bad injectors(after ohming them out). they may also have other ideas. your local garage may have them u can access(?????). hope this helps. it's all i can think of now. good luck .
P.S.= that more gas than normal thing, sounds like a TPS.
