What do you guys and gals think of the different 15w-40 synthetics (any brands to stay away from, any with great results, anything I should know)
I am thinking about using the Royal Purple 15w-40 syn during the summer. I can get it for 20 bucks a gallon. I am using Rotella 5w-40 syn for the winter and I just don't like the idea of going back and forth between dino and synthetic and I don't want to tow with a 5w-40 here (sometimes it gets really hot in the summer).
There is no reason not to tow with it and use it year round. It is a syn not a dino oil, therefore it it a perfectly capable oil for those applications. Once hot, it will act like a 40 wt or there abouts anyway.
Either way, both oils, and many others too, are a good choice. Let your wallet decide.
Why not just go with a 5W40 synthetic? Scafes is right. My understanding is most of the syn 15W40 are just marketed that way and are capable of better cold weather performance than the 15 suggests.

I use Rotella 5w-40 Synthetic year round in Las Vegas (very hot in the summer) and it works great. We do some towing with a 20' Travel trailer with no problems.
My problem I have is that Ford says to use 15w-40 if towing with the 6.0. They must have a legitimate reason for that, maybe I am putting too much confidence in the Ford engineers. Plus when the spread of the numbers are bigger isn't there a downside to that. I don't know, but thanks for the input so far.
Once the engine is warm, there's no difference between 5W-40 and 15W-40.
The difference between the two is when the engine (and oil) are cold..... really cold, like well below freezing, where an SAE 15 grade oil is pretty darn stiff. Then, the 5W flows better, and makes cold starts a lot easier on the engine.

I'm in SoCal and also run Rotella 5w-40 Synthetic year round. The temperature in my neck of the woods is not so extreme as Vegas, but it does get cold (20*f) and it does get hot (125*f). I have no oil concerns throughout this 105*f range...
I don't mind a little extra hassle or money to do the best possible thing for my truck. I understand 5w-40 is fine for towing and you guys haven't had problems but is the Royal Purple 15w-40 better (little extra protection.) What company has the best or most widely used 15w-40 syn?

and you will learn all you could ever want about oil. There are a couple of thoughts on oil, some guys are loyal to a brand for various reasons and some guys think oil is oil as long as it meets specification. I fall into the latter myself and buy oil based on viscosity and API rating. Its like deciding is Ford better than Dodge, you will eventually form your own opinion on oil too, but its for you to decide as best can be an extrememly subjective term.
Ford dealerhips here in central CA have their new Motorcraft 5W-40 CJ-4 synthetic Diesel oil available now and are saying that it covers the full temperature range and uses of the dino 15W-40 Motorcraft. I've heard from other local suppliers that it is likely repackaged Mobil 1 but don't know. Ford has brochures showing specs.
So there should be no problem with use of 5W-40 in your truck. I have made the switch for my '06 F-250 used for towing all over the western states and Canada.
i usually use Schaeffers 7000 Supreme Semi Syn 15-40 and live in So Cal. if i know i am going to go snowboarding a lot and travel somewhere colder in the winter i will switch the Schaeffers 9000 5-40
