i took the belt off and isolated the sqeaking noise to this part, but i don't know what it does or what it is for. it's a smooth pulley (the smooth side of the belt comes into contact with it) it's for a 96 7.3 with 167,000 miles, and the location is on the driver's side of the motor, above the power steering pulley, and below the a/c pulley. looks like the pulley is easy to remove with just two small bolts holding it in place. also, this pulley spins counter clockwise if you're looking at the motor from the front of the truck. any help on what it is that i need to order would be appreciated! if you need a picture, then give me your email because i don't know how to upload it (url?), or you can teach me! thanks!!!!!!!
Dont count out the belt, I recently replaced a serp. belt and that belt was so loud from the squeking. It was embarresing to drive my truck and people were giving me funny looks. I changed brand and the noise went away.
no it doesn't squeak with the belt off, but when the motor is running and the squeaking noise is heard, the pully wobbles just a bit. if i didn't mention this before, the squeak is consistently intermitent! hehe. it sounds off once every 1-4 seconds. btw, i had my dad and brother listen to it and they agreed that this is the source of the problem. so i'm 99% sure that is where the noise is coming from. anyways, i did buy another pulley and will install it tomorrow morning. i'll keep you informed and thanks for the help!
[QUOTE=Cuda_jim;6024590]Is that the vacuum pump? If so, the pump may be going bad. Try to spin it by hand, should be smooth. Any binding, it's due for replacement.
A silly question but should the vac pump spin freely by hand ?
