Hey guys, long time no post, busy making a career for myself. I'm trying to get back to putting my truck together, but I need to get this engine done. Now I was reading in my Ford parts interchange that the FT 360 motor in heavy duty trucks used forged internals. Since I want to do a pretty monster supercharger build and being that the factory pistons in mine are 8.5:1, I guess my question is has anyone put thought to using the forged parts out of the FT motor? The theory is good but I haven't looked to far into it. My motor is set up pretty well, I won't bore you with the specs, thats not why we are here anyway. So, will FT forged internals (aftermarket pistons) withstand excess of 600 whp?
I'm not up on HP rating it will take but the 391 crank drops right in the 360 blocks. But the crank snout shaft size is larger OD and has to be turned down in order for all the hardware to fix on it. Now if you were to use a 391 block with the thicker walls and so on. you'll need to bush the dissy hole in the block. Because it has a bigger oil pump drive shaft. And the larger dissy is needed. Bush it down for the FE dissy won't wobble around in block.. my 2cents Orich
Nova, yeah, the 361 FT crank and rods are up to the job. But the block isn't. When you consistantly get well above sixhundred horsepower, the block doesn't last long. It can take 1000hp, but the more power you run through it, the shorter its life. If you are going to build that kind of power, you should seriously consider ProGram's cross bolt mains. And the rod bearings won't last long at that power level either. You can remachine the rod journals wider and use bearings made in a Chrysler ( 2.375 ) or Chevy (2.200 ) size. To use the 361FT crank, you'll have to turn the snout down to passenger car/light truck size, or modify the front cover to accept the larger FT diameter seal. Whatcha plan on doing with this anyway ? And how about considering a 391FT crank instead ? Or one of Scat's new cranks with even longer stroke ? DF
The engine is the stock one out of my 69 F100 4x4. It is going to be one of those trucks you see out occassionally on the weekends. If this engine should detonate I'm going to purchase a 460 motor and install a twin turbo set up that I designed. Quick questionf for you Dino, how much power is a naturally aspirated 360 good for? Now please keep in mind my engine in punched .030 over, rod's have been smoothed, crank knife edged and shamfered, mains honed and oversize bearing installed, heads ported, headers port matched to flow perfect to the heads (no thanks to hedman), stainless cobra jet size valves and valve guides installed. Thanks
