I have tried to search for this but I am not coming up with any info. My 99 SD (240,000 kms) will start, but not until it cranks over a good 8 or 10 times. I have had the copper gaskets replaced in the injectors, I have had the compression tested (Okay), I have replaced both batteries and the starter is okay. I am running out of ideas. The truck will (eventually) start and it runs fine. No problems. Restarts are longer than I would like (6-10 cranks). Some vacuum pump under the hood (no idea what it does, right side on the inner fender) runs for as long as the GPR when the key is first turned on. Other than that, no other definable symptoms. Any ideas? Thanks.
The only thing that comes to me is the HPOP reservoir might be draining down. But that doesn't fit with long restart, it should be full on restart. Just to eliminate it as a problem check the level after sitting. It should be about 1 inch from the top. Check it before it sits overnight and then in the morning. Should be at same level in the morning.
As far as I know the only thing that vacuum pump operates is the heater a/c controls. I am unaware of any other use for it. So I managed to handle 1 of your questions, I think.
Hey, thanks for all the quick replies.
Now some really telling questions.........
1) HPOP resevoir is located.....where?
2) IPR = ?
Now one I understood right off. Yes the vacuum pump probably is for the A/C. My other Ford truck (1947) doesn't have too many of those things on it.
As you can all see, my knowledge of new diesels is painfully low. Thanks for the opportunity to improve.

IPR is the Injection Pressure Regulator that is located on the bottom of the HPOP.
It has a tin nut on the rear of the IPR body and a two wire umbilical that is plugged into the top of the body of the IPR.
It is around twice the size of a spark plug.
There are some very tiny plungers and o-rings inside that when they wear out, all kinds of driveability concerns start to pop up.

Thanks for all the feedback. A lot of things to check. As soon as I get a day off, I will look into the HPOP resevoir. The ICP will have to go to the dealership. Fuel filter was changed before the winter. I was wondering about fuel pressure to the injectors, but that too will have to go to the dealer. Oh well. Onward and upward.
