DirecTV and splitters

Probaly a dumb question but here it goes. In my upstairs there are 2 bedrooms, one has satilite coming into it and the other doesn't. Can we run a splitter to the other room so that one would also have satilite TV. I have a spare converter box from an upgrade i did so thinking it would work. Only thing i think would happen is that if both TV's were on and someone went to switch the channel the other TV would also go to that new channel. Is my thinking right or am i totally off and this wouldn't work.

the direct tv guys will run a splitter off of the satelite unit for your box, i dont think it would work because they program those cards inside the boxes, and that upgrade box would need to be programmed for your account

or hook it up and call direct tv they may be able to program over the phone

you should be able to run a splitter BEFORE both boxes and have it work, you'd just need to activate the other box (which is $5 a month), they can do it over the phone.

OR, you could split it AFTER the first box, and run a length of coax to both TVs (you wouldn't need the second box) but both tvs will show the same picture all the time.

No Splitter...

You can't use a traditional splitter like you do with cable. You have to use a multiswitch similar to one on this link...

Satellite Multi Switch, Satellite Switch, Multi Dish Switch, Sw21, Dish Network Switch

And here's more information which may help... I actually purchased my multiswitch from these people... currently I'm running eight (8) receivers from one (1) dish using a 2x8 switch.

Hope this helps!

bandbford, could I use that switch and run only one line into the house, but have 2 receivers in different rooms? would both tv's be able to be on different channels? I have 2 lines running into the house now,but the one in the kids room no longer picks up a signal because something is wrong with the "thing" on the satelite dish the cable plugs into(sorry I don't know the proper term for this part).would be great if I could just use the one line into the house and not have to get the new part for the dish.

Here I am...

Sorry for the delay... I was out of town most of the weekend!

To answer your question(s)...

You will need the two cables from the "LNB" on the dish which connect to a multiswitch and then to each receiver... this allows the receivers in your home to tell the multiswitch which transponder signal to pick from (even or odd numbers) depending on which channel you want to watch. When the receivers are linked together using a splitter the LNB gets requests from different receivers at the same time an will not function properly.

I'll try to explain... The multiswitch picks up the signals which are at the dish and when you pick a channel to watch in say your livingroom, it sees that request from the receiver and "switches" internally to the transponder needed for you to view that channel. At the same time the kids want to watch Sponge Bob which is on a different transponder the multiswitch sees that request and "switches" internally to the transponder needed for that channel. The LNB on this dish only sees the signal from the multiswitch not multiple request from several receivers.

The LNB may or may not be bad on your dish... connections you currently have may be causing you problems at this time here is some information which may help you.
