You probably need to remove the cowel. If the plasic snap bushing on the wiper linkage is broken or missing you should be able to get one at the local auto parts store in the HELP section. I would replace all 3 of them. I think thats how many there are. This is the only reason I can think of why the wipers would act like you describe.

yea it does sound like the linkage has fallen off. The cowl is the plate with the holes in it which is in front of the windshield. Its usually held on my 15-20 screws (pain in the ****)
