coolant pressure

im messing with a 01 7.3 with 200,000 miles. the coolant tank keeps rising on fluid at idle. there is no diesel fuel in coolant. doesent smoke any. changed thermostat and didnt help. temp guage goes to normal but top rad hose and coolant in tank is cold, and the heat is cold. took water pump off thinking maybe impeller come loose. no luck. im lost at this point, if it was head gasket i would think coolant should still flow. im wondering if coolant has to flow through oil cooler to make its flow. just a thought. any help would be great. im sure im leaving somethig out. any questions just ask and ill answer. thanks.

I have had a couple thermostats bad right out of the box, not on a powerstroke but on cars.

Normal on the dash gauge doesn't really mean much. What temperature thermostat did you install, and are you sure it was the right length stem? Do you have any way to see what the engine oil temperature actually is, like Torque Pro or AE?

Rising? Are you aware that the "cold" line on the degas is a farce? After the truck has been run to full temp, the fluid settles about an inch or two below the "cold" line. Don't top off and see how this behaves.

Do you have anything that looks like soot in the degas?

Air in the system? Sometimes i will put a small hole in the t-stat (or snip in a V with the cutters) to help with air trap. And as said i have had new t-stats bad out of the the box also. All cars. Many times..

i do have a way to check oil temp. when i say rising i mean it comes from the min mark and will come out the top if i let it run long enough. ill put thermostat in a can and heat it up and see if it opens. its really weird. guy said it done it like 2 months ago just one time then was good. now all the sudden it doing bit again. rising in the tank. i always get the trucks that make you scratch your head.no suet in the tank. it is actually pretty clean.

Don't top it off the next time it spills. Sure, carry some coolant in a jug... but watch what it does if you don't top it off.

Did you take out and put in a long-stem thermostat like this,

or was it short-stem thermostat? Just curious...

No heat out of the heater? Could be a plugged heater core. Try bypassing the core and see what it does.

Take a look at this post for why you should pretty much ignore the Min and Max marks on the bottle.

im not sure what happened, but i put truck back together, started it up and let it warm up. oil temp got to about 200 and water was saying 300. i knew it wasnt that hot, must be air around the sensor not fluid cause i still had no heat. i shut truck off, loosened cap and it burped a few times then the tank went empty. i put coolant back in it started truck and i have heat and everything is good. i just dont get how it got air in it in the first place. guess ill just have to try it and see how it goes.

Yes, yes... I've been down this road and I'm in a happy place now. My coolant is below the Min mark and stays there. I'm keeping pressure and all seems good.

I can't belive one of my treads has been offered to help others...

Mine system is working just the way you would think it should after I did my flush. When cold water level sits just under the max cold mark, at full operating temp it is between the full mark & the top of the bottle, when she cools down it settles back right under the full mark where it started. I put a 203 deg t-stat from diesel o-rings in.

How are you getting the coolant temperature reading? Unless it's a manual transmission, the coolant temperature isn't even monitored by the PCM.
