shifter removal

The last thing I need to remove before my cab comes off is the 4-speed shifter. Right now it's covered in 50+ years of old grease and gime. How does it come off? Yes, I know I should have bought a shop manual by now, but I didn't.

The round dome that the shift rod goes through screws off and then you can pull the shift rod out of the tranny.

shift lever removal

Yes, as mentioned previously unscrew the cap at the bottom of the lever. You should be able to find it no matter how much grease. Just start at the shift ball itself and slide your hand down all the way to the tranny. I haven't taken that cap off since high school, but I guess it unscrews-you might need a big pipe wrench or something if its been on there forever etc. But once you budge it a little it should come off easy. And once you do that-get yourself a good flashlight or some light of some kind and look for a little "pin" in the side. That pin is holding your lever inside the tranny. I haven't done this since I was a senior etc. but somehow you push or pull that pin out-I guess you probably push it with a pic or something its about 3/16 or maybe 1/8 inch in diameter as I recall and 3/8 long? Something like that. You'll be OK. You'll see it. Just go slow and think about it. I don't think you can hurt anything.

Oh ya one more thing, I think you want to have it in neutral before pulling the lever up and out--Like I say its been awhile. Hope I'm giving you the straight scoop.

Thanks guys. I'm going to order a shop manual this week. That's not technically spending money on the truck, right? Either way, that's the argument I'll use. The spousal unit isn't much happier now that the truck is moving from the garage to the backyard piece by piece.

The shop manual is the best money you're going to spend on the truck. Working on a truck without one is like working with a blindfold on. The manual has 95% of all the information you need, the rest you can get here.

I've been pretty lucky so far. I'm down to just the cab sitting on the frame with both axles still attached. I've every nut and bolt that would come off the same way it went on bagged and labeled. I just know I'll definitely want the manual when I start putting it back together.
Probably strange, but I'm more concerned with doing the plumbing than anything else. I'm fairly confident in the mechanical workings and electricity doesn't bother me, but the thought of pushing on the brake pedal when I need to stop (after doing everything myself) is a bit thought provoking.
