will my f-100 front end hold up well when i swap my 460 -c6 combo into it ,was wondering if the king pins will be under more stress
the truck has a 351 w fmx now
These trucks came with 460, so the front will hold up fine but the springs for the 460 are heavier. All other parts are the same as far as the front end goes. Most auto part stores only list one spring part # for all 150's around that year. I used a set out of 1990 bronco with a plow pkg. when I swapped in a 429 in my 79. Good luck.'
This may be a quesion for Mil1ion. I am in process of doing a 460 for a 390 swap in my 76. I put new springs in, and was only able to find one listing for the v8. I not too worried, as The entire top end is aluminum, but its still a good question.

I have a 77 F100 SWB that I will be putting a 460 in. Does your 460 have a front sump oilpan or is it a rear? The reason I ask is because I have been getting mixed opinions from people saying that I need a front sump oilpan while others are saying that a rear sump will work. Did you get your engine in yet? Let me know somthing if you can. I am still gathering parts. The engine came out of a Ford RV and so I have to replace the transmission and engine dipstick tube assemblies and I need to find some 460 frame perches and order a set of mounts. My truck is 2 wheel drive also and so far most all of the posts that I have found deal with 4 wheel drive trucks.
I used a front sump pan. My dipstick is the stick tha tgoies throught the timing cover. No problems with fitting the motor. Butttttt.............. I had to re-use the old dip stick tube. Seems these tubes are almost impossible to find. If you need to replace that tube, I would look at the rear sump pan with the dip stick tube. Much easier to find.

My engine currently has a rear sump oilpan with the dipstick tube attached to the side of the oil pan. The problem with the tube is that it is extra long. It extends out past the fan. Will the rear sump pan work in a 2wd truck like mine? I was told that it would give clearance issues.
I can't answer that. I can only telll you th efront works but its a PITA trying to find the damn dip stick tube. They just don't exist. I talked to one place that said They'd sell em to me but I would have to buy 25.
Will I be able to use any front sump oil pan for a 460 or did they only make one type of front sump pan? Do they also make them with the dipstick tube entering the side of the oil pan or will I also have to replace my timing cover?
I swapped a 460 into my 67 using factory mounting from a 79 model. The motor moves around alot. I have tried two new sets of motor mounts but still have the same problem. It concerns me that the transmission mount may be taking most of the torque load. I used a front sump car pan. It doesn't hold as much as the truck pan and the drain is impossible to get to so add another one at the rear.
There are 2 front sump pans, 1 drains in the rear and the other drain on the side. Do not use the side drain, this was from a car and in the truck frame you can't access the drain plug without some effort. As for a rear sump I cant tell you if they are better or nor as I used the front sump type. Depending on what motor mounts you use you may have to move the trans mount back to the last set of holes also.
Been awhile since I have been under a 2wd. A rear sump pan may not work in a 2wd due to the steering linkage is behind the x member-right where the rear sump would be. It is worth a try tho, if you have a rear sump pan-my guess is that no, it will not clear.
Dipsticks and tubes can be a pain, it took me a few years to find one for my rear sump setup that is correct. I used one from a 5.0 for awhile, it worked-I had to basically just do an oil change, then see where the oil level was and scribed the dipstick so I knew that was the full mark-after running the engine.
Best bet is to get a front sump truck pan, and timing cover w. dipstick. Both will be tough to get if they are still in the truck. May have to lift the engine for the pan, then use a puller to remove the harmonic balancer.
Hope you can find one at a wrecker, if your lucky they might have both pieces laying around-just phone or ask around. Make sure whoever you talk to knows Fords, cause chebby guys have no clue, and would scrap a 429 boss to keep a dead 305.
Actually! try phone some engine shops, they tend to have stuff laying around, or may know where to find parts.
Good luck!
well having a 4x4 with a front sump i know that the sump sits right above the axle i believe the rear sump is for a 4x4 and the front sump is for the 4x2. i havent had any clearance issues but i also have about a 8 in lift
I have the stock frame perches to do the swap to a 460.
Do you still have those frame mounts? Are they for a 2 wheel drive or do they use the same frame mounts for both 2 and 4 wheel drive? How much are you asking for them?

P.S. To every body else, I bought a front sump truck oil pan off of ebay for $50. I now need frame mounts, motor mounts, front sump oil pump and pickup tube, timing cover with dipstick, and a set of long tube headers.
