does anyone know if they make a header for a 2.5l 98 ranger and what r some good but cheap upgrades for this motor?that could possibly increase 50 horse
If you find a way to get a 50 hp increase cheaply, please let us know. Horsepower cost money, no way around it, and to gain 50 horsepower on a 4 cylinder would break the bank. jd
The lima has poor flowing head. Port and polish and bump up compresion by milling the head or pistons. A high lift cam and roller rockers. A good place to check out would be racer walsh.com.
you can port them but do not polish. Roughen the intake ports to maximize atomization. It could gain you as much as 10hp. I don't think you'll be able to gain 50 hp with out forced induction or nitrous.
Actually, Walsh has performance heads for the lima. Also you can get up to 200 hp all motor on the lima, maybe more. The question then becomes how drivable is it for daily use. The 4 banger will make it's hp in the higher rpm range, thats ok for a race car. For a truck, you also want some torque in the lower rpm ranges, thats hard to do n/a because of lack of displacement. A stroker kit would help there, if there is one. We know we can at least go up to 2.5 as they make a 2.5 lima. I'm not saying it couldn't be a daily driver at 200 hp, I just know there's a point where you cross over the line on a lima. I would think 30 hp anyway no harm no foul. A turbo would give you both, hp and torque to match, thats why it's very popular with the lima's. There's allready turboed lima's from the 80's turbo coupes, merkur and svo stangs to be had to make swaps easy and some what cheap. There were also some 80's couger XR-7's with turbo 2.3, my buddy had one. I could of bought it from him for 250.00$ as it had a rusty body, but good motor and the motor is what you would need.
im not sure on the year, but a few years back on ranger powersports i seen something about a2.3L turbo from a thunderbird 1988,1989 maybe that would bolt right up everything matched except alittle corner of the heater box for the turbo anyone know about this?
Well, except the 2.5L is already a bigger motor, and the heads are different. You could build the turbo system from scratch, you would have to find someone who makes custom manifolds if one is not already on the market. I kinda like the garret turbos. I have an Airesearch model that I was gonna use on my '90 2.6L, but I'm not sure I'll get around to it. I have some other related stuff, but I'm just not sure what I'll do at this point.
Guy's swap in 80's turbo motors into rangers all of the time, it's a direct bolt in, no fabbing involved. Also Walsh has 2.5 turbo blocks to turbo a 2.5 rather than the 2.3. It's just a matter of forged internails to handle the boost. Garret turbo's are some of the best on the market as Bear River has mentioned. Turboing a lima is the best way to get a good balance of hp and torque for a daily driver. It's live having a V-8 without the weight and still get good mpg with 4 dollar a gallon gas.
