Emissions Stuff Blew Up

I tried to get the truck and car home this weekend. But this blew up.

The dealer told me it was a "thermatic control valve" or something like that.
They also said that it blew cause of a oneway check valve between this and the exhaust manifold.

Just curious to know what your thoughts are.

It looks like the plastic is melted in the vent holes of the body and all over the insides. Yes the dealer is right, in both the part name and the cause. There is a check valve to isolate the exhaust gasses from going into the thermactor system. On my old truck, that check valve was behind the engine, between the heads.

I have two of the one that blew, and two of the check valves.
One of the check valves, is behind the engine, (in the middle as you said) and the other, is open, think off of the middle front to back on the ds. Easy to get to. Don't think that is the bad one though.

Thank you, just wanted a second opinion.

One more ? does anyone know if they are dealer only parts?

Not sure if they are dealer only, but I'm sure there's got to be a lot of them at your local u-pull it scrap yard. I've had pretty good luck at these places for used emission control parts.

I am hoping they do have one as that is where I am going.
I am going to put this truck up for sale as soon as it is, "drivable" again.
I just don't want to spend the $130.00 something on the part that blew and who knows how much on the valve that should be bad.

One thing you might have to watch for at the junkyard is the calibration number off the truck and the part number. If the part number is exact, I think it will be good. If it's different, if the calibration number (on the driver's door post) is the same between the trucks, it will still work. But if the calibration number is different and the part number is different, even if it fits, it might not work or it might affect the way your truck runs. Mind you, being this is for the AIR system, I can't see how the parts could be that different, but you never know!

There's an ex-Ford parts manager that's here sometimes on the board. I hope he sees your post, because he can tell you exactly how to look for this stuff. He's really quite knowlegable and he's a real good guy. If you have the time, seach my NIC for prior posts and there's one around September of last year where I chatted with him about this very thing, but I just can't remember his advice.

Yep, look up NumberDummy. He just recently got the service info for trucks of this vintage. He'll be able to answer about anything you could ask.
