cowl induction?

has anyone ever seen a cowl induction hood for one of these trucks? I've been thinking about fabricating one for my 70' but if there is someone popping them out, i'd probably buy one instead. How do you guys think the truck would look with one?

I don't recall ever seeing one on these on a bumpside. The center ridge in the hood is so pronounced that it may look awkward..? It would certainly make it a challenge to fabricate. Post some pics if you make one, I'd like to see it.

youre right, fabbing one will be a challenge. I have a way to keep the center ridge, but it unfortunately calls for cutting up a junkyard original. But from drawings i've done, it should look cool. Definitely pic's to follow.

If you have a bead roller...... Of course then you also have to have a lathe to make the correct die for the center ridge.....

At which point we'll all want to come over and use your stuff.

Bah. You can get good enough results from five gallons of bondo and a six pack.

i was thinking of taking a donor hood, and cutting out the center about 8 inches from center on either side, and from cowl to about 2 inches past where the nose rolls down toward the grill. from there, notching the nose to fit over the original ridge on the original hood, set it about 12 in. back, then make sides, then weld the whole shebang together. Add some filler and paint. Sounds crazy, but i think i can make it work.

It would be much easier to slice the hood from front to rear where you want the raised section, then cut out some sheetmetal to make the new sides with and weld the whole thing back together......

I sure a donor hood is wide enough to lay a template out for the entire cowl as if it were a flat sheet. Then cut it out, bend it up, leaving some feet to be used as spot weld areas. Then cut out the section where it is to go, position the new cowl, spot weld the feet then run a thousand spot welds at the seam, grind, fill, paint.

Use some card stock paper from wally world to make a template for mock up, then lay it flat on the donor hood.

This sounds like an awsome project and I would love to see the results of your labor I would like to say one thing though. Everybody and their brother have put cowl hoods on everything. What about using the old Mustang Cobra Jet scoop. You can get them up in size so they look good on these big hoods or you could even build it out of sheetmetal probly alittle easier than a cowl. Just a thought.

I put a fiberglass cowl induction scoop on my 70 way back in about 82. It looked good, IMHO. I wouldn't recommend the fiberglass, though after about 10 years it had cracked pretty badly. I rivited it on and smoothed it with bondo. I was in high school and didn't know any better! Unfortuneately, it was WAY before the days of digital cameras, so I don't think any pics survived.

I always (since) wanted to find a steel camaro (sic) hood to cut up and weld in a metal one.
