whistle out tailpipe

anybody got a clue?got a 97 f250hd 351 5spd 4.10 4x4 ,check engine light comes on maybe once a month,no codes whatsoever....anyway, the real problem is when the light comes on i turn the key off and on, and light goes out. well a couple weeks ago i did my key off key on trick, and forgot to take my big fat foot off the pedal, truck backfired, and now a got a whistle that comes and goes coming out my tailpipes. the cat is still clear,i got straight pipes out the back so the mufflers are not an issue.thought maybe an airpump check valve, but buried behind right side head.before i try twisting off rusty airtube pipes.i would love to know if anybody ran across this?............sorry i haven,t posted in a while.turns out if you have #s in your password you can't use the # pad on the right of my keyboard

So you have no cat or muffler? Or the cat is there and you have verified it's completely intact? A broken cat was my guess, but the air tube could also be the source.. rust eventually gets to all these trucks and nothing loosens up corroded parts like an explosion.

We used to call them "shutoffs" in my day....big boom. Ruined my share of exhaust parts. You said the cat is still "clear" is it on the truck now or did you remove it???
