offset?

I am confused on this... am ordering my wheels and tires as soon as I decide on wheels, moto metal 951 or diamo karat 17. from what I understand the 951's sit in, towards the spring and doesn't stick out very far...I tried to look at there offsets and all but I do no understand it....I want the wheel to stick out past the fenders some, but not a whole lot, can anyone help?

I got the measurements for the two I want and the ones I have..I think I got it figures out sort of.... Backspacing is what is getting me now, I understand offset, the ones I have now are 0 offset, and one of the new sets is -12 and the other is -18..that -18 will sit closer in towards the leaf spring then the -12 will..correct?

I'm not positive buit it looks to me like the higher - number offset the farther out and the higher positive number farther in.

That is saying that a 0 offset would be dead center of the rim

I thought the higher the - the closer to the spring it was...and the lower the - the further out of the fenders it was...and the 0 was dead center....

I hope someone chimes in soon and can help before I order!

On Backspace, the higher the number the closer to the spring it is.

0 offset means that the wheels mounting surface is dead center in the middle of the wheel.

Offset varies based on the wheel width. The chart on that link does a pretty good job of showing what offset and backspace are at different widths.

On 99-04 trucks you want to stay around 4.5" Back Space....so if it's a 10" wide you'd want -25mm offset or so, if it's a 12" wider you'd want a -51 offset, etc..

05+ trucks you'd go any where from 4.5" - 5.75" back space depening on how far you wanted them to stick out.

Negative offset: When the back of the bolt pad is closer to the inside of the wheel; when mounting surface is inboard of the rim centerline. Tires stick out.

Positive offset: When the back of the bolt pad is closer to the street side of the wheel; when the mounting surface is outboard of the rim centerline. Tires tuck in.

both rims are 20x10

so the -18 offset and the 4.79 backspacing will be tucked in

and the

one with the -12 offset and the 5.3 backspacing will be outside the fenders?

I think I got it right...

No, the 5.3" Backspace will be tucked in and rub on your leaf springs.

4.79" will stick out further (not a lot).

so it goes off the backspacing and not offset?

If I do not want it to rub my leaf springs I need to go with the 4.79 backspacing...

will either stick out past my fenders?

How far it sticks out is easier to figure out based on Back Spacing.

Offset will tell you back space and how far it will stick out if you know the width as well.

They each tell you where the mounting surface of the wheel is.......they just use different reference points to get the measurement.

The 4.79" B.S. on a 10" wide wheel will stick out a little.
As for rubbing the leaf springs, that will also depend on what size tires you go with.

The more negative offset, the more the tires stick out. -18 will stick out of the fenders more than -12.

Backspace (also called rear space in the image) is the measurement from the mounting flange to the inside lip of the wheel.

Offset is the measurement of the mounting flange to the wheel center line.
