Texas you can get permit at 15, and then get your licsence at 16 if you have 30 hours of driving. 1-5am curfew, only 1 non relative passenger, and no cellphone while driving for 6 months.

well in maine you fill out this form like

4/11/08 drove for 1 hr
3/12/08 drove for 30 min
etc

then your parents sign off on it, really easy to BS and most people do

Same here, they give you a form and after you drive you write down the date, how long the trip was, and whether it was at night or day. Once you fill a sheet up you just have to have a parent sign it. A lot of people BS around here, there are lots of ditsy girls driving around in the fancy cars that have no clue about driving. I just BS mine, but I did at least the 50 hours, just lost track and started writing down times.

In Washington, you can get your permit at 15, and license at 16 if you passed a drivers ed course, have so many hours of driving time, and pass the written the driving test. Then you have to wait until your 6 months is up before you can drive anyone but family around, except if there are over 20. Also curfew between 1 and 5 a.m.

In Ontario, you have to pass a written test (with a score of atleast 75% or something like that) then you get your permit (or what the gov't here calls a G1) u have to have that for a year atleast unless you take drivers ed, then its only 8 months you need ur permit. after that you are eligible to take your road test to get your "G2" licsense. G2 restricts include only 1 non family passenger, 0.00% blood alcohol level, no driving between 12am and 4am. You need that for a year before you can get your full liscense, which is a "G". You have 5 years to complete this process.

G basically means what the gov't calls a G class vehicle, so anything thats under a 5ton payload. In other words, u can drive a 5ton, with out a load.

thats alotta stuff compared to you some of you other guys!!

I know this isn't a state.. But too bad!

In BC, Canada the age for your "Learners" is 16. With your learners you have to have someone older then 25 with 5 years driving experience with you at all times. You are also only allowed ONE passenger, no more. You have this for a year (or 9 months if you take a driving course)
After your Learners you take a road test, if you pass you get your "N". I'm not sure what N stands for... Newbie maybe? lol. When you get your N your allowed to drive on your own. Only restriction is you can't have more then one passenger (stupid rule IMO). After another year (I think its actually 2 years now..) you can take another road test to get your full liscence.

Our system is stupid...

Yup, I just got my full licence, i'm 20. The rules are getting tougher every year.
Oh, and with the "N" or the "learners" you get a lovely magnet you must have on your vehicle at all times
heres the L you must display
http://www.bcbudgettruck.com/images/L_sign.gif

They are also harder on you if you get into an accident or whatever. I went onto probabtion when I had my N because of a speeding ticket...

Our System works.... Would you rather we go back to the old system where after 6 months your give free rein to go out and kill yourself, or some innocent bystander, all because your not old enough or have enough experience behind the wheel to know how to drive safely.

IMPO I dont think anyone under the legal voting age should have a drivers license. If your not old enough to vote, then your not old enough to drive. A vehicle is as dangerous as a loaded gun in a childs hands...

Oh and if you actually read your Drivers Handbook (which I highly doubt you did) you would know what the N and the L stand for. Seeing as you dont, go read the damn book, that is what it is there for.... Dang kids....

OUr system doesn't work for alot of people, theres alot of bad drivers in BC. Not sure about the old system, i wasn't here for all of it. I know of the old system where you had your L for a year or 6 months if you take a drivers course, I dont see the issue with that.

I read my drivers hand book, know what L and N stand for, had a forgetful moment. I stated what L stood for, N stands for novice. I've had my full license for awhile now, I dont see why your getting upset with me?

Ok, the old system, which is Before the graduated program. Kids at 16 were killing themselves because they figured having mommy or daddy teach them their bad habbits allowed them to do what ever they pleased on the road..

I'm not upset with you... Our system doesnt work for people who figure they know everything there is to know about driving. 16 in my books isn't old enough to drive. Again, as I see it, If your not old enough to vote, your not old enough to drive....

Oh and I am one of those people who took my drivers exam at 16, had my full license at 16.5.. I have been driving for almost 30 years, and my insurance rates just went up (again)... I have had 2 accidents in 30 years, I haven't ever had a speeding ticket, I haven't ever gotten behind the wheel if I have been drinking, I haven't ever driven stoned. My insurance on my F150 is $1880 p/year. Hmmm how is this a fair system...

In Virginia, you get your learners at 15.5 after taking a test at DMV (25 questions, can't miss more than 5). Then, you can only drive with a licensed family member over the age of 18, or non-family member over the age of 21.

You must hold your learners for 9 months, and within that 9 months, you need to complete the driving test at the DMV, or spend 7 hours behind the wheel with a driving instructor. At 16 years and 3 months of age, you get a pink slip and a court date when you can pick up your license. The pink slip IS your temp. license.

Or you could just skip the whole thing, wait until you are 19, then go to DMV and pass their parking lot test and get your license right then and there.

At least, this is the way it was 5 years ago when I got mine...

No license = no job. How long do you expect kids to stay at home with mommy and daddy footing the bill?

I definatly agree that kids shouldn't be driving (without supervision) at 16. In a perfect world I would say that it would depend on maturity, some people shouldn't be driving till there 30.

I wonder why your insurance rates keep going up. I'm currently at a 15% discount with 3 years experience. My truck costs me $146/ month or about $1700 for the year.

At 16 Mommy & Daddy are legally responsible for you regardless of a job. Legally your not to be on your own.
