getting along in my '83 project now... starting to fit out the new intake with the plumbing and whatnot. is it necessary/good idea to replace the thermostat?? also, i bought a new billet water inlet and when i put it on with the old thermostat in there, the thermostat is a little loose when the inlet is tightened... should i put a bit of RTV silicone in there?? or will it swell and fill the spot as it heats up with the water??
Usually the gasket sort of holds the thermostat in place. But I guess if you have a fancy housing, it has a o-ring instead of a gasket? I have put a few little dabs of sealant on the thermostat, especially on a Ford because it likes to slip down and get caught in the housing.
It's a good idea to replace the thermostat. I don't know what it is, but most of the time I disturb the cooling system, the thermostat goes out a few months later.
no offense, but i'll buy canadian if its any way possible... what makes you think the american is better than any other crap out there?? its all the same mass produced garbage these days.
thanks Franklin, i'll buy a new one. the "fancy thing" came with a gasket, not o-rings but the big hole for the water is a little larger than the thermostat. i'll try a couple of dabs of silicone on there.
