Has any one ever heard of a factory pto tran in a 52 f1 ( it runs a air compressor ) Or is it a trans out of a f2

When I purchased my F1 back in January, it came with all the parts in boxes. In one of those, was a book on the Chelsea PTO. Maybe try a search with that name?

What does the air compressor power? If the trans was just there with a PTO and not powering anything, then it may be a swap. But if the PTO is actually designed to be used, i.e. driving an air compressor, then there's a much better chance that even though it may still be a swap, it was at least done 'way back' and with a real purpose.

Yes, Chelsea is a major maunufacturer of pto's. You shouldn't have any problem finding them on the web.

Hi Scott,

I have a 1948-1955 Chassis parts catalog and it appears that the 52 F1 could have came with a 4 speed transmission. It's shown in the illustrations and it has a PTO cover on one side. None of the 3 speed transmissions appear to have PTO covers.

So maybe it could have come with it. The actual PTO's were probably added by dealers, I could only find the PTO cover in the parts book. I couldn't find the PTO.

It also calls one of the 4 speed transmissions "synchronized" but the one for the 52 F1 was not. Is yours a synchronized transmission (2nd/3rd/4th)?

By the time these trucks are this old everything under the hood could have been changed!

IIRC, the synchro 4 speeds are in the larger trucks.

The 4 speed "crash box" (non-syncro), 4 speed "syncro-silent" and 5 speed (also syncro) all came with PTO.

4 speed "syncro-silent" (Borg Warner T98) was optional on F4 through F6, and standard on F6 with the optional 254ci "Big Six" engine. T98s were used by Ford and Jeep during the late 40s to mid 60s and are very similar to the later T18 / T19 which were used by Ford, Jeep and IHC. These are very popular with the 4x4 crowd.

5 speed overdrive was standard on F7, optional on F8
5 speed direct was standard on F8, optional on F7
