Hi all out there, first day here, still no heavy truck to my name but looking to purchase very soon...
Have been doing alot of research, and the 7.3 seems to be the cream of the crop in my price range. This will be my first diesel, looking to pay around $15k and have found one or two in my area..
Any information to pass on before a purchase would be much appreciated, things to look for, things to be scared of, etc... The 2001 F250 I am looking at has 146k miles, and being sold by a diesel only reseller in my local area, the interior looks good, exterior looks good, but not to up to speed on what I should be looking for mechanical wise.
Any help would be appreciated!
I could post a link to the actual vehicle, just not sure that is allowed here.
The '01 have a few things that some may be leary of. The main one being an electronic diode that Ford used just in that model year. It is prone to failure and it usually takes the whole tranny with it I believe.(those that are more in the know than I will likely chime in on the subject). The other issue with the '01's that some here may find to be an issue, is the fact that in that model year Ford decided to go from a forged metal rod to a much less strong, powdered metal rod. The problem with PMR's doesn't show up until you get well over the 400hp mark so it will take a lot of mods and money to get to where that will be a potential problem.
The link that Brandon posted is a great resource. Welcome to the forum and hopefully to the Club.
Yes, I read about the diode and the dates of 7/27/2000 and 3/23/2001 to look out for, I will ask the dealer that specifically..
So no problem with that amount of miles on the vehicle? I'd think that any major problems that would crop up would have already... I don't anticipate towing any large amount of weight, this is more of a "recreational" vehicle for me I feel the need to roll over stuff!
I don't think I will need that extra HP so the rod issue doesn't bother me to much, if anything I will attempt to mod for mileage increase only..

Reason: added info
That amount of miles means she's just getting broken in!! I'm in the same boat as you: always wanted a big truck to play with, and when I could afford it, BAM!!! I'm in, and the 7.3 (if taken care of) will be your most reliable & best option. Cummins are easier to make fast, but the truck around that great engine SUCKS.
How far are you willing to travel to get your truck?
Where are you located now? (If you click on User CP on the blue bar you can add in your town/state)
Do you want 4x4? Dually? CrewCab, SuperCab, or a (gasp!)Regular Cab?
I ask all the above because in case the one you're looking at turns out not to be the one for you, the members here may know of one that suits you better!
Posting links is fine, lets see it! Just so you know, I just recently bought my 99 F250 crew cab short box 4x4 with 163K miles and a reman Ford Auto Trans for $12000 and I feel like I got a very good deal. I would say $16000 would be a good deal on the truck you are looking at if it all checks out.
I know of a place in Virginia that sells nothing but diesels and they have pretty good deals. I have the link at home though. I will post it tonight when I get home(around 7:30 EDT).
I like the first one better too. I wouldn't worry about the 147K. Taken care of, these trucks can get 300K + . I have 188K on mine now and still runs great.
Go to Craigshelper and select Virginia...then search for ford diesel...look at the 1999 in the Charlottesville area...beautiful! Oh and welcome...and take a second job now to pay for the mods.
ON EDIT: I have a carfax account (just bought a one-owner 80K, 1995 Volvo 960 for $4K ) for another couple of weeks. If you want me to check VIN numbers, just shoot them to me via PM.
the first 2002 that you link (green and gold) has already had the hubs changed out to Warn premium hubs(this is an upgrade) but be it known that the ESOF (electronic shift on the fly) **** will not work, and you will have to get out and lock the hubs in for 4x4 to work.
The SCA needs to be checked in both trucks, the green one has the standard 1 cd /tape player/amfm, while the white truck looks to have had the radio chnaged to the 6 disc player.
Notice how the green one is from the factory with no steering stabilizer, It is a mystery that we have not figured out as to why some do some dont.
Hkusp, I would really like that link, as the one I want just went out of reach on what I am willing to spend...
nlemerise, thanks for the offer, i'll defiantly take you up on that
i'm gonna call those guys in the morning and see what's up with the one on hold, maybe a tentative offer, don't have high hopes tho, as they raised the price
